The homeowners were looking to refresh the landscape of their historic 1911 home, creating flexible spaces for relaxation and entertaining, as well as a lawn for their soccer-loving teen.
A mature sycamore tree, surrounded by a deteriorating deck, occupied prime space for entertaining. Rather than risk disturbing the tree’s root system with an at-grade patio, we directed the homeowners toward a new Kebony deck built upon the foundation of the old. This solution expanded the space for dining and lounging while preserving the health of the tree.
Given the unique approach to the front door, tucked away on the side of the lot, we designed semi-circular stone stairs to guide visitors up. A collection of potted conifers cascades down the steps, defining the circulation path and providing an evergreen screen that filters views into the garden while gently ushering guests toward the entrance.
